I’ve been having some eggs benedict moments lately. First at Dubai’s very own Clinton Street Baking Company when my friend ordered the eggs benedict on a buttermilk biscuit (and I had a serious case of food envy). And then on Instagram when @lolleroll posted her eggs benedict #yolkporn. (Can you believe #yolkporn has over 81,000 tags on Instagram??)
So when you’re having one of those days when you just must eat eggs benedict for breakfast, what better place to go than Eggspectation? This restaurant was invented for times like these.
But I have to confess. I’m not a massive egg fan. So the name “eggspectation” did at first put me off. And I never really knew what to eggspect. (Couldn’t resist.)
This place was heaving on a Saturday morning with lots of couples and families, plus kiddos who were really happy to eat chocolate-laden pancakes and waffles for breakfast. We were told there would be a 20-minute wait, but in fact it was only a few minutes before we were shown to our table.
Can’t have a Saturday breakfast without a bottomless cup of coffee. I didn’t see it on the menu but you get free refills on the drip filter coffee, which suited me just fine. Eggspectation’s coffee was dark and strong, just the way I like it.
This is another restaurant with a massive menu. And it was as if they were reading my mind – they have an entire page dedicated to eggs benedict! And another page to omelettes. And another page to pancakes and waffles. And I haven’t even got started on lunch and dinner.
Mr. S ordered the smoked salmon eggs benedict which came atop a healthy brown bread and a bed of potatoes.
I ordered the eggs florentine – poached eggs over a bed of spinach atop an English muffin with Hollandaise sauce on top. You can choose whether you want your poached eggs soft, medium or hard. I like mine soft and runny and they were poached perfectly. But saucewise, the Hollandaise was didn’t have enough of a lemony tang for me and I do prefer the buttermilk biscuit at Clinton Street Baking Company which just takes this dish to a whole new level.
So all in all, this was a great place for a leisurely Saturday, but Clinton Street Baking Company still gets my vote for the best eggs benny.
Verdict: Great buzzy vibe. Perfect for a weekend breakfast.
Note to self: Leave the eggs benny for Clinton Street, but go back for dinner to try the lobster mac and cheese.
