I am so jealous right now. Mum got to meet Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens AND sample the new breakfast menu at Pots, Pans & Boards.
This is The Tom Aikens – youngest British chef ever to gain two Michelin stars. The Tom Aikens of Iron Chef UK. The Tom Aikens, supporter of sustainable fishing, famously photographed shirtless embracing a wolffish.
Pots, Pans & Boards is Tom’s first venture into Dubai. Clearly Tom knows how crazy Dubai residents are about food. You’ll find it at the south end of The Beach, the foodie haven which is home to 45 different F&B outlets.
It’s a casual, family-style sharing concept offering informal all-day dining, and everything at the restaurant is served in a pot, pan or on a board. And as of 9am yesterday, you can now get breakfast Pots, Pans & Boards-style. Here are some Viennoise pastries. Mum says they were the flakiest she’s ever had! Freshly baked, the inside soft and warm. Apparently all the foodies were raving about these bad boys.
The second course was a platter of almond-scented oatmeal with a side of toast with avocado and bresaola on top. Mum says the oatmeal was light and airy like an almond-flavoured cloud. Not overly sweet and not overly heavy, with almond slivers and a warm, almond-flavoured foam. Mum also says the crunchiness of the toast with the saltiness of the bresaola and avocado was a good contrast.
The main course was a breakfast skillet of sausages, eggs and veggies. Hidden underneath this lovely sunny-side up egg were two lamb merguez sausages and some kind of ratatouille of aubergine, peppers and courgette. Mum says the egg whites were crispy and well-done – just like they cook it in Taiwan. Mum says this gives the dish more character, with the crisp egg whites, soft sauteed vegetables and the spicy savouriness of the sausage balancing out the dish. Mum gave it a two thumbs up.
Sounds like Mum enjoyed sampling the new breakfast menu. And as they say, mothers know best!
Verdict: Mum loved Tom Aikens. And she also liked the informal sharing concept, great service and delicious food.
Note to self: Add it to the list!
