Put away your lightsaber folks. This is not Dubai’s first Star Wars-themed eatery. Nor is it a gastropub. Nor is it affiliated with Samboy Lim’s basketball clinic. (Who??) Skye & Walker is the latest in a new wave of healthy, sustainable eateries. That’s so 2016. (In a good way.)
They describe themselves as “an urban sustainable neighborhood eatery for globetrotters and savvy foodies in the heart of the old Dubai.” And that they are. I like to think of myself as a savvy globetrotting foodie – and I love this place.
Skye & Walker is located on the ground floor of the somewhat dated, not-so-trendy Marriott Executive Apartments Dubai Creek, in the middle of Deira. If you’re a savvy globetrotting foodie, your first thought might be “Uh oh” or “Oh no.”
But one step inside Skye & Walker and you’ll forget you’re in the Marriott Executive Apartments. In fact you might even forget you’re in Dubai. The interiors are decked out in industrial chic. The flooring, furniture and decor are sourced from reclaimed, recycled and eco-friendly materials. Their menu includes vegan, raw and gluten free options, as well as a number of healthy, nutritious dishes. And they make veggies look drop-dead gorgeous.
This restaurant is designed to appeal to a certain crowd – the kind of person who likes healthy eating and can appreciate food like kale chips and chia seed pudding. (Even if they don’t eat it regularly, like me.)
Below are guilt-free kale chips – pieces of kale dehydrated in the oven to produce an air-light, flaky, delicate snack.
This kale Caesar salad was delicious – this time, fresh and fully hydrated kale, tossed in a Caesar dressing with pomegranate seeds, sunflower seeds and gluten-free croutons.
Below are the quinoa and white bean pita pockets with rocket, tomato, cucumber, red onions and tahini, though I didn’t enjoy these quite so much as I found them a bit bland and too similar in texture.
If you’re avoiding carbs, you can order the S&W Zoodles (zucchini noodles) with garlic, onions, cherry tomatoes and parmesan. However, if you want pasta, you can opt for spaghetti instead.
If you want some protein, you can choose one of a few simple meat dishes, such as the herb-crusted chicken breast with a side of broccoli, which was simple but tasty.
Here’s another simple meat dish – roasted salmon fillet with a side of asparagus.
On top of that, you can also order pizza, burgers, and a range of salads.
For dessert, you have a few options, such as this flourless chocolate cake, apple crumble, or gelato.
Though I personally would have preferred this for breakfast than dessert, I was surprisingly enamoured with this raw carrot cake served in a mason jar. Though it tastes nothing like actual carrot cake, this blend of raw carrots, walnuts, coconut and dates topped with a cashew cream was wholesome and moreish.
Verdict: A great place in the heart of Deira for guilt-free eating, though they have something for everyone so definitely worth trying.
Note to self: I don’t remember ever enjoying healthy food quite so much! There are many things on the menu that I still want to try – including their breakfast. If only it were closer to home.
