If you’re familiar with Dubai Marina, you may very well be familiar with the Counter Culture Café – the rather inconspicuous restaurant which has been around for years, located on the lobby level of the Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites.
One might think the name is something of a misnomer, as there’s nothing particularly subversive about this place. The interiors are decked out in a cheerful orange and white, with an inoffensive all-day-dining restaurant feel.
Misnomer or not, in an effort to gain more custom from local residents, they’ve recently updated their menu to reflect current dining trends, with a focus on healthy options, fancy coffees and all-day breakfast.
They’ve updated their coffee menu to include a number of hot, cold and specialty coffees – such as siphoned coffee or a pour-over coffee. The lattes, of course, come adorned with latte art. But foodwise, it’s not quite somewhere to expect a gourmet meal. Rather, it’s a place where you know you can bring your laptop, use the free wi-fi and relax for a while – especially if it’s quiet as it was when we were there.
The new menu has quirky sections named Watch your Waist, Power Foods, While you Chat and Browse, and Back to Childhood – so you can satisfy all sorts of cravings in a single sitting, with options like salad, Asian and breakfast.
My kale salad came in a diet-sized portion with some avocado, blueberries, cherry tomatoes, a bit of quinoa, and a light touch of pomegranate dressing. Unless you have an extremely small appetite, this salad is better as a supplement to your meal, rather than your entire meal.
My selection of homemade momos were were very photogenic, served in a bamboo steamer, but they weren’t the most authentic I’ve ever eaten. I suppose that shouldn’t come as a surprise, but they certainly filled a void.
Mr. S ordered the Lazy Breakfast Platter, which was served on a skillet with a croissant, scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, turkey bacon, hash browns and grilled tomato.
For dessert, we shared the Apple Pie Crema. The word “Crema” should have prompted me to ask, but I was misguided by the words “Apple Pie” therefore I was suprised when said “apple pie” arrived as a milkshake. Perhaps a freakshake would have been more befitting – I mean how on-trend would it be to have a honking piece of apple pie shoved into the mouth of this also-on-trend mason jar mug?
Verdict: A convenient place to meet your friends if you’re in the area, where you can get a coffee or something even stronger.
Note to self: If you want to wow or be wowed, go elsewhere. Unless, of course, they add freakshakes to the menu…
