Taipei Dao was opened a few years ago by Taiwanese restaurateur Felice Liao, formerly of Sino Chai in Dubai Healthcare City. She’s a health-conscious woman with a conscience who insists that her food is of a standard that she would be happy to eat herself or serve to her family. She imports authentic Taiwanese ingredients (some of which they also sell at the store) and uses organic, free-range and non-GMO where possible.
The restaurant itself is spacious and comfortable. There’s a separate bakery to the side and a small area where Felice sometimes performs Taiwanese tea ceremonies. And the best part, it’s full of Asians. (Always a good sign!)
There are 18 varieties of dim sum that you can choose from – many of which are enhanced by tea, such as the Jasmine Tea Chicken Shumai and Ten Li Tea Beef Dumplings. The best part – everything is made fresh in-house by actual Taiwanese chefs. The flavours are delicate and well-balanced without MSG so not only does the food taste good, but you feel good afterwards.
Just one look is enough to tell you this is a cut above the standard dim sum you find at your bog-standard buffet.
But it’s not only dim sum. Below is one of my favourite dishes – eggplant with minced chicken cooked in a claypot (eggplant, ginger, garlic, spring onion and soy sauce). Because we were feeling particularly healthy, we ordered a mixed 5-grain rice (with brown rice, black glutinous rice, buckwheat, millet and Chinese pearl barley) to eat it with.
Last but not least, don’t miss the gorgeous ice creams made on the premises in Asian-inspired flavours such as red bean and black sesame. Felice herself samples these until she’s happy with the flavours.
Verdict: Authentic Taiwanese food that you feel good about eating.
Note to self: Fab place to go in Dubai for dim sum.
