Breakfast at Aubaine, City Walk

Dear Diary,

Today’s breakfast was at Aubaine, the London chain that somewhat recently made its way to Dubai. It’s a stylish French restaurant with lovely bright interiors that serves a fantastic breakfast. The only problem is that there are far too many delicious options on the menu, that I couldn’t decide what to order!

I always gravitate towards Eggs Benedict (or whichever variation of poached eggs comes with smoked salmon and spinach). But this time, the item that first grabbed my attention was the Croissant Aubaine (smoked chicken, caramelised onions, poached egg, tomatoes, avocado, gruyere cheese) – though granted that’s not on the breakfast menu.

But since just this week I read that Americans spend $900,000 a month on avocado toast, I decided to eschew my old standby and jump on the avocado toast trend, partly because Aubaine’s avocado toast also comes with poached eggs, partly because I didn’t want to post yet another Eggs Benedict post on Instagram. I also ordered a side of Hollandaise sauce and nearly had the best of both worlds. But I digress.

What’s on the menu:

Bread Basket – you can’t have a respectable French restaurant without good bread!

Piccolo Latte – my perfect cup of latte! A diminutive mug of latte with some beautiful latte art – the perfect size to avoid a coffee that’s overpowered by milk. (Though my second cup was far milkier with much less beautiful latte art.)

Avocado Toast – or as they call it, the Tartine d’Avocat – avocado toast with slow roasted cherry tomatoes, toasted seeds, sprouts and poached eggs.

Caprese Sandwich – mozzarella, tomato, basil served on cereal bread with a small salad served on the side – this is the dish that I didn’t try, but it looked and smelled divine.

Superfood Salad – Quinoa, beetroot, roast butternut squash, mung beans, alfalfa, broccoli, spinach, peas, pomegranate seeds, mixed nuts and seeds – a flavourful and healthy salad. You have the option of adding chicken or halloumi on top.

Chocolate Eclair – chccolate eclair with a chocolate cream filling – though not my favourite eclair (bottom right)

Blueberry Milk Cake – a wet milk cake (top left)

Verdict: Breakfast was superb, though every place I go seems to be my new favourite place for breakfast. Is that such a bad thing?
