Vida Downtown’s Best of the Brits Friday brunch is the bee’s knees. It’s part of Vida’s popular Urban Picnic Brunch, currently showcasing food from destinations around the world.
Not only do you get a wide range of British grub – from pies and piccalilli to scones and Victoria sponge to fish and chips and roast dinner – but they’ve taken it one step further with a full-on London Underground theme.
When you arrive you get an Oyster card and a Tube map to direct you to the food stations, which are all cleverly marked with a Tube stop. You can start at Grape Manor (and get your Pimms, iced tea, or entire bottles of wine to take to your table), then make your way to a number of stops including Vida Town Market, Sweet Treat Lane, Baker Street, or the best stop, Piccalilli Circus. My favourite dish – the mini chicken pies at High Tea Road. At Vida Cheese Yard, I even found my favourite soft-ripened cheese, Gortnamona, from County Tipperary in Ireland. Not quite Britain, but still the British Isles, so I guess that’s close enough!
Your table is Main Street – and once you’ve had your fill of breads (Wheat Cottage), salads (Covent Garden), pies and finger sandwiches (High Tea Road), pizza (Baker Street), and cheeses (Vida Cheese Yard), you can request your tray of mains. They bring a selection of hot dishes to your table on a long wooden board. Here, you really get the best of British – roast chicken, roast beef, roast lamb, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, roast veg, fish and chips, bread sauce and gravy. While the chicken and lamb were a wee bit overcooked for me, the beef, potatoes and Yorkshire puds were perfect.
Verdict: Gimmicky? Yes. Do I care? No. Scrummy? Definitely.
